This scholarship was established in 2004 by the family and friends of former Metropolitan Community College Philosophy instructor, Douglas McLeod Weber. Income from this memorial fund shall support a student pursuing a degree in the liberal arts.
Douglas began teaching full time at MCC in June of 2001. Before his death, he had thus taught full time three years as instructor of Philosophy. He died while photographing and hiking in the Italian Alps on his 47th birthday.
He passionately loved teaching and counseling young people. He was an avid reader and student, and an inspiration to many of his students. Photography and chess were his favored avocations.
Born in Massachusetts and growing up on the Stanford University campus, Douglas Weber earned his bachelor's in Philosophy from Santa Clara University, and graduate degrees in Philosophy from Notre Dame University and the University of Nebraska.
While at MCC, Douglas at various times taught Introduction to Philosophy, General Ethics, Logic, Critical Reasoning, Ethical Theory, Applied Ethics, Business Ethics, Philosophy of Religion, Environmental Ethical Theory and Humanities 110, which he described as addressing "the fundamental questions of ethics, politics and the arts, which have continued to interest 'reflective' members of societies throughout the development of western civilization."
In the words of his colleague at Creighton University, "Doug was a devoted, dedicated teacher of philosophy. He was always reflecting on methods of challenging, exercising and inspiring his students. Doug never shrank from teaching difficult or controversial material. He developed new courses often and created many vibrant webpages to assist his students' learning. He combined rigor, energy, a thirst for truth and an engaging sense of humor in the classroom."
