National Manufacturing Month highlights importance of MCC’s Center for
Advanced Manufacturing

OMAHA, Neb. — October is National Manufacturing Month, helping showcase careers in the industry by encouraging companies and organizations to connect with students and community members. The Center for Advanced Manufacturing, located at the MCC South Omaha Campus, has been highlighting those careers since it opened in 2020 and has helped industry partnerships flourish while giving students career opportunities.

“Part of our goal at the College is to introduce career opportunities in the trades to students, and Manufacturing Month is a good time to re-think how we are doing that,” said Scott Broady, associate dean of Industrial and Automotive Technology. “The Center for Advanced Manufacturing is a sparkling new facility that we can show off on tours to prospective students and maybe show them something they haven’t seen before that could peak their interest.”

The Center for Advanced Manufacturing is the result of a $10.5 million renovation of the old Industrial Training Center. The nearly 30,000-square-foot facility includes new space for programs and offers many degrees and certificates in the manufacturing industry. Students can earn valuable credentials in Critical Facilities Operations Technology, Manufacturing Process Operations, Mechanical Design Technology, Precision Machine Technology, Welding Technology and more.

“Manufacturers are struggling to find the next generation of skilled workers,” said John Banark, MCC Industrial and Commercial Trades instructor. “The average age is growing and a shortage of replacements with the skills needed to replace them is not there. Local industry partners have reached out to me on more than one occasion seeking help with multiple job opportunities available. I have always loved manufacturing in my 40 plus years in the trade and MCC is trying and making head way on closing that gap.”
