Trades competition will challenge local high school, college students

OMAHA, Neb. — The annual Metro Omaha Trades Invitational will return to Metropolitan Community College on Friday, Jan. 27 from 8 a.m. to 3p.m. The event will feature area high school and college students, who will showcase their skills in various competitions. The Metro Omaha Trades Invitational aims to promote the trades and other fields, introducing students to career opportunities that are in high demand.

“MCC and industry partners have teamed up to offer students a unique experience to show off their talents in various trade areas, in a setting where they’ll race against the clock and each other for an opportunity to represent MCC or their high school at the SkillsUSA State Leadership & Skills Conference in April,” said Zach Pechacek, MCC SkillsUSA Director and Electrical Faculty. "Students will also visit with local employers, alumni and instructors to discuss career opportunities during lunch.”

The College will host the event at three different locations. The Fort Omaha Campus (Building 25), 5300 N. 30th St., will host competitions in cabinet making, carpentry, electrical construction wiring and HVACR. The South Omaha Campus (CAM Building), 2909 Edward Babe Gomez Ave., will host CNC milling, precision machining and welding. The Automotive Technology Center at the South Omaha Campus, 3203 Edward Babe Gomez Ave., will host three different automotive competitions. The Applied Technology Center, 10407 State St., will host the Fire Fighting competition. The invitational acts as a qualifier for other trades competitions in the state of Nebraska.

There will be an awards ceremony at 2 p.m. inside the Center for Advanced Manufacturing building at the South Omaha Campus, room 120. First, second and third place for each competition will be recognized in both secondary and postsecondary competition levels. One lucky student will be presented a 2014 Chevy Impala that was restored by our Automotive Department as part of the Recycled Rides Program at MCC.
