What do Medical Transcription Editors Do?

Medical transcription professionals play a key role in providing accurate medical records. The industry is evolving to include two important and distinct roles:
  • Medical transcriptionists who type (or transcribe) the dictations of doctor-patient interactions, creating the reports that are included in patients' medical records.
  • Medical transcription editors who are specialized medical transcriptionists focused on correcting and editing the written reports generated by speech recognition software, which electronically transcribes dictations into text.

The Medical Transcription Editor training program was designed by medical transcriptionists for medical transcriptionists. In addition to developing medical transcription skills, you will also train as a specialized medical transcription editor, preparing for the future of the industry. AUDIENCE

Individuals who aspire to work as a medical transcriptionists in the medical field.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS

Metropolitan Community College complies with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act and its amendments. Most employment in this industry requires passing extensive background checks.  If you have concerns about passing these, reach out with questions before applying.

In order for students to be successful in the Medical Transcription Editor program, they must:
-Have a high school diploma or equivalent
-Be very proficient in grammar and understanding English
-Advanced skills in Microsoft Office
-Ability to type a minimum of  60 words/minute
-Some medical terminology and punctuation knowledge.
-Very detailed-oriented with great attention to detail and listening skills.
-Plus be able to perform the following technical standards:

Ability to use senses
  • Visual acuity to identify, read, and understand directions in English on equipment and other documents required in facilities.
  • Ability to distinguish distance, colors, objects, and persons
  • Ability to hear sounds and warning signals in training facility, which could lead to an emergency situation requiring some type of proactive or reactive response
  • Ability to detect and tolerate smells that may unpleasant or indicate a possible danger
Physical Ability
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk continually.
  • Ability to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch frequently
  • Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Close vision required to see computer monitor, read documents, and operate copy and fax machine
  • Work environment is indoors and climate controlled. Occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions
