State SkillsUSA competition will welcome more than 120 MCC students
OMAHA, Neb. — More than 120 Metropolitan Community College students will participate in the SkillsUSA Nebraska Championships in Grand Island, Nebraska, April 11-13. The competition challenges students in various trade industries, with winners advancing to the national competition this summer. The competition is free and open to the public and will be held at the Heartland Events Center and Fonner Park, 700 E. Stolley Park Road, Grand Island, Nebraska.
Students will work against the clock and each other, proving their expertise in fields such as automotive, construction, digital cinema, electrical, firefighting, photography, welding and more. All contests are operated with the help of industry, trade associations and labor organizations, and test competencies are set by national industry standards. Top students will advanced to the national competition in addition to receiving scholarships and prizes from community colleges, businesses and industry partners.
“SkillsUSA is a wonderful way for MCC students to showcase their talents on a larger stage,” said Zach Pechacek, MCC electrical instructor and SkillsUSA coordinator. “Students take great pride in representing their College and the competition provides them an opportunity to work under pressure and hone their skills.”
Included in the 120 MCC students are Omaha area high school students enrolled in various MCC academies and dual enrollment programs. Winners from MCC will be announced after the completion of the state competition. For more information, visit skillsusanebraska.org.
