New MCC Code School brings in local businesses

OMAHA, Neb. — Kiewit Corporation, Mutual of Omaha and other Omaha area organizations have joined the Metropolitan Community College Code School, creating a strategic public-private partnership that will develop tech talent in order to meet the needs of the companies’ growing demands. Employees of the four locally-based organizations will go through the Code School curriculum developed by the MCC Workforce Innovation Division. To celebrate, a grand opening event will be hosted by MCC with company partners on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 5:30 p.m. in The Mastercraft building, 1111 N. 13th St.

The College revealed plans for the MCC Code School earlier this year. The nine-month, 20-hour per week noncredit program will prepare students for an Agile work environment and emulate best-practices. Students will be given a job description and will undergo performance evaluations. The MCC Code School’s immersive learning culture will reflect the Agile and other strategies used by today’s successful organizations.

“The MCC Code School will improve the Omaha information technology workforce, giving area companies greater options when hiring,” said Randy Schmailzl, MCC president. “We are all about partnerships, and the new Code School already has wonderful partners on board that will see their employees get the skills needed to help them grow.”

Classes will be offered in the Millwork Commons area of North Downtown Omaha, giving greater access to some of Omaha’s most influential organizations.

“Millwork Commons is a neighborhood focused on innovation, collaboration, and growth. The MCC Code School will be an asset to Omaha while also helping to further the vision of the Millwork community. We’re excited to welcome students and instructors to the neighborhood. We look forward to the opportunities this partnership will create.” said Paul Smith, founder of Black Dog Management, which is developing Millwork Commons.

“Mutual of Omaha is eager to partner with the Metropolitan Community College Code School to offer several of our associates an opportunity to train for a career in application development,” said Shonna Dorsey, Senior Business Systems consultant at Mutual of Omaha. “Our company’s need for strong tech talent is growing rapidly, and many of our existing employees have a strong interest in information technology. This collaboration supports our commitment to investing in the professional growth of our associates to help meet that need.”
